A dynamic and insightful communication interactive session, chaired by Commissioner Dr. Wamalwa Dennis, took place at the Kimathi Boardroom, bringing together staff members of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) to sharpen their communication and media skills.
The session featured five key presentations, each aimed at empowering staff with crucial knowledge in various aspects of communication, media relations, and content production.
Lynesther Mureu kicked off the presentations with an engaging talk on “The Power of the Pen and Mind.” Her focus on the 5Ws (Who, What, Where, When, and Why) and How provided a foundation for effective storytelling and communication. Mureu emphasized the importance of clear and precise information gathering, critical for impactful report writing and effective public communication.
Harriet Ajiambo followed with a presentation on “Photography and Audiovisual Production,” where she highlighted the importance of visual storytelling in today’s digital age. Ajiambo covered the fundamentals of photography, videography, and editing techniques, emphasizing how strong visuals can enhance the narrative and reach wider audiences.
Jude provided a detailed overview of “Report Writing and Editing Guidelines.” Jude’s presentation stressed the importance of coherence, clarity, and consistency in report writing, which is essential for both internal documentation and public-facing reports. He outlined practical tips on structuring reports and offered valuable insights into the editing process.
Cherry then took the floor with a presentation on “Social Media,” underlining its growing role as a tool for public engagement. She provided practical strategies for increasing KNCHR’s online presence, managing social media platforms effectively, and crafting messages that resonate with diverse audiences.
The final presentation was delivered by Dan Mule, who spoke on “Media Relations and Strategies.” Mule offered a comprehensive guide to building and maintaining positive relationships with the media. He emphasized the importance of strategic communication, press release writing, and handling media inquiries in a way that aligns with the Commission’s goals.
In his closing remarks, Commissioner Dr. Wamalwa Dennis expressed his appreciation for the valuable insights shared during the session. He emphasized the importance of effective communication in advancing KNCHR’s mission and fostering stronger connections with the public and media. “Communication is at the heart of human rights advocacy, and as a Commission, we must ensure that our messages are clear, compelling, and consistent,” said Dr. Wamalwa.
