The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), under the leadership of Commissioner Dr. Wamalwa Dennis submitted its Budget Policy Statement for the Financial Year 2025-2026 to the Departmental Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs (JLAC). This submission marks a critical step in the Commission’s efforts to secure adequate funding to fulfill its mandate of promoting and protecting human rights for all.
In its statement, the KNCHR highlighted the significant financial constraints it faces due to recent budget cuts. These constraints have adversely affected the implementation of key program activities and hindered the Commission’s ability to fully realize its mandate. Despite these challenges, the KNCHR remains committed to addressing pressing human rights issues and ensuring that essential services reach all citizens.
The Commission has called on legislators to prioritize and enhance funding for the upcoming Financial Year 2025/26. Increased financial support will empower the KNCHR to:
- Tackle critical human rights issues more effectively.
- Devolve essential services to Mwananchi (citizens) across the country.
- Reduce over-reliance on donor funding, ensuring greater sustainability and independence in its operations.
The KNCHR remains steadfast in its mission to uphold human rights and calls for the necessary support to continue its vital work in promoting justice, equality, and dignity for all Kenyans.
