My journey

Welcome everyone! As a Commissioner of Human Rights in Kenya, I have faced numerous challenges throughout my career, but I have also experienced incredible moments of fulfillment and success.

Today, I want to share my journey with you, highlighting the obstacles I have overcome, the achievements I am proud of, and the other important roles I have taken on in this field.

So, come along with me on this inspiring and eye-opening journey, as I take you through my experiences as a human rights champion in Kenya.

BIOGRAPHY

Who is COMMISSIONER DR. DENNIS WAMALWA?

Dr. Dennis Wamalwa, Ph.D. is a Commissioner with the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR). He is also a Board Member and the Vice-Chairperson of the Intersex Persons Society of Kenya (IPSK).  Dr. Wamalwa is governance, community organizer, social justice advocate, gender specialist and human rights defender with a wealth of experience in advocacy initiatives. Dr. Wamalwa is also an associate research consultant with AFRIBA Research Consortium, which plays a part in the social change in Africa. He is a member at Honor and Diligence Support Service, an international consortium of Counsellors and Psychologists offering remote psychological counselling across Africa.

Additionally, Dr, Wamalwa has a wealth of experience spanning over 20 years as a Lecturer, Trainer, Researcher and Mental Health and Psychosocial well-being consultant, with various International, National and Local NGOs, Corporates, Government, Health and Religious Institutions. He is a registered member of Kenya Counsellors and Psychologists Association with an Associate Counsellor Supervisor Status.

He holds a PhD in Peace and Conflict Studies from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) Kenya and a Masters of Arts in Counselling Studies, from The University of Manchester, (UK) coupled with numerous professional credentials. He has to his credit, 20 publications in referred journals with high impact factors and; he has supervised over 25 postgraduate Master’s students to completion from various universities between 2016 and date.

Experience

What is my Experience and Expertise?

1. Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), Africa Nazarene
University and MKU 2015 – 2021.
Part-time Lecturer: Lectures, Supervises Bachelors, and Masters Students. Involved in mentoring students towards holistic mental well-being through offering counseling services as per the student’s psychosocial needs.

2. Honor and Diligence Support Service and Coaching and Emotional Support
Platform -April 2021 to date.
Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Consultant: offering remote psychological
counselling to survivors of Mozambique Palma attach across Africa. Offering remote
worldwide mental health support to clients and giving talks on deferent topics regarding
mental health.

3. Makarios Children Home – Nyeri- 9th October – 11th October 2020
Training consultant: Designed and successfully implemented a 3 days training in Conflict
resolution & management, Basic Counselling &Parenting Skills and Team building course to 15 staff members.

3. Red Cross Society (RCS) and Ministry of Health Kenya (MoH) March- October
2020. COVID-19 NATIONAL RESPONSE: Psychological Trainer cum Supervisor:
I was involved in training the COVID 19 Frontline Workers from the Ministry of Health
Kenya on Psychological First Aid and Self-Care, coordinated all the Counselling activities at
various COVID-19 quarantine centers and offered clinical supervision for healthcare
providers across the country. This was done through Tele- conferencing, counseling and
Zoom meetings/training in accordance with social distancing.

4. Peace Brigades International Kenya, 2019. Consultant Psychosocial Wellbeing Counsellor cum Trainer: Provides psycho-social well-being support to Peace Brigades International staff who are under distressful conditions including rehabilitation victims of political torture. In particular, facilitates individual and group counseling support, and offers short training/workshops on related topics such as substance abuse, and post-trauma stress management. Also identifies staff health issues related to workplace stress and self-care for staff among others.

5. International Research and Exchange Board (IREX; Washington DC) Securing Access to
Free Expression Program Africa, 2017- 2018. Consultant Psychosocial Well-Being Counsellor Cum Trainer: Responsible for the design, preparation, and delivery of holistic psychosocial safety training and workshops to human rights defenders, Journalists, and Layers (Male and Female) from Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Rwanda successfully. Involved in counseling and consulting with multicultural clients from East and Central Africa.

6. Global Training Institute (GTI), 2017 -2018. Consultant Psychological Trainer: Designed and successfully implemented training in change management designed for senior officers from the Ministry of lands. This was in view of the movement from analog to the digitization of services within the ministry. Also implemented training in performance management designed for senior officers from National Hospital Insurance Funds (NHIF).

7. AMREF Training Center, November 2017 Senior Psychological Counsellor cum Trainer: Co-designed, prepared and delivered training in Disaster Management and Trauma Counselling course. The course was tailor-made for seniors and middle-level managers in Government ministries, uniformed officers in the military, NGOs and UN agencies, health professionals, county planners, fire department personnel, social scientists, disaster managers and development officers.

8. Flamingo Welfare Association, October 2017
Consultant Psychological Trainer: Trained Flamingo Welfare Association staff on management, principles of leadership, conflict resolution and management, and team building. This course was designed for senior officials from the min and representatives from across the 37 counties in Kenya.

9. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) – Belgaum, 2005 – 2016
Senior Psychological Counsellor: Headed a multi-cultural team which was in-charge of
emergency preparedness and response, Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Program
Development, psychological trauma interventions including Sexual Gender Based Violence
and made man disaster survivors such as 2009 Sachangwan oil tanker accident that occurred in Kenya. Led training and supervision of MSF Counsellors. Networked with other
stakeholders in emergency operations.

10. Interdepended Medico Legal Unit (IMLU), 2007- 2010.
Part-time Consultant Psychosocial Wellbeing Counsellor: As lead psychologist offered
psychological support to torture victims of police brutality during the dubbed ‘Okoa Maisha’
interventions by military in Mt Elgon in 2007. Visited all prisons to offer Counselling services coupled with medical and legal interventions. Lead Prison staff debriefing, counselling and empowerment short training/workshops coupled with supervision.

11. GOAL Island – Street Program for Children and Youth in Difficult Circumstances, Kenya Mobile Clinic, 2000 – 2005 Team Leader cum Psychological Counsellor: GOAL is an international aid charity dedicated
to alleviating the suffering of the poorest of the poor. Counseled, reintegrated, and reconciled over 250 children to their families across Kenya. Was in charge of debriefing and supervision to both national and international staff.

12. Koinonia Advisory Research and Development Services (Research Division), Nairobi,
Kenya, 2002 – 2008 Consultant Psychological Trainer: Designed and implemented short courses for social workers, Counsellors, nurses’ clinical officers, and subordinate staff from health facilities operating in major Nairobi slums. Intervened in team reconciliations through counseling and facilitating support groups.

13. Tipple E Consultants (TEC) Institute of Management, 2002 – 2008
Trainer/Facilitator: Designed and implemented certificate courses in counseling psychology. This saw the successful graduation of over 500 students during my tenure.
Caritas Italiana under the auspice of Koinonia Community, 1997 – 2000.
Psychosocial Counsellor cum Training Officer: Supported in offering trainings to refugee
organizations supporting the most vulnerable groups in the society especially Women and
Children from the great lakes Sudan, Rwanda Burundi and DRC Congo.

Which workshops/conferences have I attended?

1. August 2019: Officiated as a Rapporteur during the 95rd Kenya Music Festival held in Kabarak University, Nakuru County from 3rd to 15th August. The theme was “Enhancing National Unity Cohesion and Integration through Kenya Music Festival”

2. April 2019: attended and officiated as a Rapporteur during the trainers and adjudicatorsworkshop 2019 edition held at Tom Mboya Labour college Kisumu County- Kenya from 19th to 24th April. 300 participants and 25 facilitators ensured that the workshop was educative as well as informative. About fifteen academic –cum- artistic papers were presented by the facilitators.

3. September 2007: presented a paper entitled “The Role of Counselling in Improving Uptake, Acceptance and Retention in PPCT Services: Médecins Sans Frontières Belgium, Kibera Experience” at the Kenya Association of Professional Counsellors 8th International Annual conference. This was held at Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi -Kenya, that brought together over three thousand Counsellors / Psychologist’s fraternity from all over the world to share practical expediencies and challenges in counselling field.

4. September 2007: presented a paper entitled “Challenges of Counselling Domestic ViolenceSurvivors in Kibera Slum- Kenya: Médecins Sans Frontières Belgium Kibera Experience” atthe Kenya Association of Professional Counsellors 7th International Annual conference. Thiswas held at Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi -Kenya.

5. April 2005: attended International Federation of Social Workers 6th Pan African RegionalConference in Nairobi Kenya from 10th -14th.

6. August 2002: Attended one-week International conference at Torino Italy with a theme dubbed“Youth for Peace”. This was organized by Koinonia Community Founder Fr. Renaldo KizitoSesane of Comboni Missionaries- Kenya.
