Introduction

On 5th August 2024, Commissioner Dr. Wamalwa Dennis had the honor of presenting to a delegation of Gambian Commissioners who were visiting the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) as part of a benchmarking mission. The focus of the presentation was on Kenya’s journey in recognizing and advocating for the rights of intersex persons.

Key Presentation Points:

  • Kenya’s Legislative Framework: The Commissioner provided an overview of Kenya’s legal and policy framework regarding intersex persons, highlighting the ongoing efforts to pass the ‘Intersex Persons Bill, 2024.’ This bill is crucial for ensuring that intersex individuals are recognized and protected under the law.
  •  Advocacy and Public Awareness: Dr. Wamalwa discussed the various advocacy initiatives undertaken by KNCHR to raise public awareness about the challenges faced by intersex persons. This includes partnerships with civil society organizations, community outreach programs, and media campaigns.
  • Lessons Learned: He shared key lessons learned from Kenya’s experience, including the importance of involving intersex persons in the decision-making process, the need for comprehensive data collection, and the challenges of overcoming social stigma and discrimination.

 Recommendations for Gambia

Based on Kenya’s experience, Commissioner Dr. Wamalwa provided recommendations for the Gambian Commissioners to consider in their efforts to advance the rights of intersex persons in their country. These recommendations included the importance of legislative reforms, public education, and the establishment of support systems for intersex individuals and their families.
