On Friday, 24th January 2025, Commissioner Dr. Dennis Wamalwa of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) participated in an insightful and engaging discussion titled “Born in Between.” The event, hosted by the Distance Open and e-Learning Practitioners’ Association of East Africa (DOLPA-EA), provided a platform for critical conversations on the rights, challenges, and recognition of intersex persons in Africa.

Key Discussions and Insights

Dr. Wamalwa was joined by Dr. Rebecca Wambua, Chairperson of DOLPA-EA and Senior Lecturer at Africa Nazarene University, in a virtual forum that attracted human rights advocates to understand and support intersex inclusion.

The discussion covered:

·       Legal and Policy Frameworks: Dr. Wamalwa highlighted the strides Kenya has made, particularly through the Intersex Persons Bill, 2024, which is currently under parliamentary review. He emphasized the importance of legal recognition and protection for intersex persons.

·       Social Stigma and Awareness: Panelists explored how intersex persons face discrimination due to societal misunderstandings. Dr. Wamalwa called for increased sensitization efforts to promote acceptance and inclusion.

·       Education and Health Rights: Dr. Wambua shared insights on the role of education in creating safe spaces for intersex students and the need for medical professionals to adopt ethical, non-discriminatory approaches in providing healthcare.

·       Regional and Global Advocacy: The discussion underscored the need for East African nations to harmonize laws and policies to protect intersex persons, ensuring their full participation in society.
