Introduction

On 16th February 2023, Commissioner Dr. Dennis Wamalwa, who is a member of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), paid a visit to Jinsiangu organization’s offices located along Waiyaki way in Nairobi. The visit was aimed at familiarizing himself with the work that Jinsiangu does as an organization. During the visit, he also raised the issue of an intersex child named Keane Maingi who needed medical attention, including a Karyotype test, which was going to cost Ksh 85,000.

About Jinsiangu

Jinsiangu is an organization that aims to create awareness, advocate for and support intersex persons in Kenya. The organization’s executive director, Samantha King’ori, and director, Frankie Kibagendi, were present during the meeting. Also in attendance was Dr. Milka Wahu, the executive director of Amka Africa Initiative, an organization that offers legal services to vulnerable persons.

Benefits of the meeting

After the discussion, Jinsiangu promised to cater for half of the cost of the medical attention that Keane Maingi needed, which amounted to Ksh 42,500. This was a significant contribution, and it demonstrated the organization’s commitment to improving the lives of intersex persons in the country. Additionally, the organization pledged to offer psychosocial support to Keane Maingi and his parents.

Amka Africa Initiative

The executive director of Amka Africa Initiative, Dr. Milka Wahu, also offered to provide legal services to Keane Maingi in case he needed them. This was a welcome offer, as intersex persons in Kenya have faced numerous legal challenges, including discrimination and lack of recognition of their gender identity.

In a nutshell

In conclusion, the visit by Commissioner Dr. Dennis Wamalwa to Jinsiangu’s offices was a positive step towards creating awareness about the challenges that intersex persons face in Kenya. The commitment by Jinsiangu to offer financial and psychosocial support to Keane Maingi and his family, and the offer by Amka Africa Initiative to provide legal services, demonstrated the importance of organizations working together to improve the lives of vulnerable persons in the country. It is hoped that such efforts will continue to grow and improve the lives of intersex persons in Kenya.
